MD 20/20, originally known as Mogen David, was introduced by the California Wine Company in 1933. The company was started in Chicago, Illinois by Max Cohen and Henry Markus to make kosher wine, but it proved to be popular with the wider public. In 1941, the company renamed to the Wine Corporation of America after it began using grapes from beyond California.
In 1962, Cohen sold his shares to Markus, citing interpersonal disputes. A controlling interest was sold the following year to Richard T. Schofield. Five years later, the MD 20/20 (for 20 ounces and 20% alcohol) of fruited wines were introduced.
In 1970, the company was acquired by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York, which had recently started to get into the alcohol business. However, by 1981 the bottling company was looking to focus on soft drinks once again, and the head of their Franzia brand at the time, Arthur A. Ciocca, led a leveraged buyout to purchase Franzia, as well as Mogen David and Tribuno, from the company. The buyout led to the creation of The Wine Group, now based in Livermore, California.
