Franzia Wine was founded in Ripon, California in 1906 by Teresa and Giuseppe Franzia. It survived prohibition by selling grapes for homemade wine consumption, and when prohibition ended in 1933 it emerged as Franzia Brothers Winery. The winery was family run until 1973, when it was sold to Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York. However, by 1981 the bottling company was looking to get out of the alcohol business, and the head of the Franzia brand at the time, Arthur A. Ciocca, led a leveraged buyout to purchase Franzia, as well as Mogen David and Tribuno, from the company. The buyout led to the creation of The Wine Group, now based in Livermore, California.
