Chateau Cheval Blanc was founded by M. Laussac-Fourcaud in Saint-Émilion, France in 1832, when he was sold 15 hectares of the Chateau Figeac. The winery remained owned by his family until 1998, when it was sold to Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère. LVMH, which Arnault is the chairman of, acquired his shares in the business in 2009, and they now own a controlling interest in the enterprise.
