Taylor Country Cellars was founded in Hammondsport, New York in 1880 by Walter Stephen Taylor. It was originally known as Taylor Wine Company, and produced only grape juice until two years later when it added wine production to its portfolio. The company went public in 1962, and was purchased by Coca-Cola in 1977 as part of its foray into the alcohol business. They rebranded the wine “Taylor California Cellars,” playing off of the recent success of California wines at the Judgment of Paris. By 1983, however, the soft drink company had had enough, and sold its wine division to Seagrams for $200 million. In 1987, Seagrams sold the brand (along with Paul Masson) to Paul M. Schlem, who then founded Vintner’s International. That company was then sold in 1993 to Canandaigua Wine, which rebranded to Constellation Brands in 2000. In 2008, they renamed the line to Taylor Country Cellars, as they diversified where the grapes from the wine were grown. Constellation held the brand until 2019, when they sold Taylor (along with 29 other brands) to E & J Gallo Winery for $1.7 billion.
