Mark West Wines was founded in Sonoma, California in 1978 by Bob and Joan Ellis. The brand is named after the Mark West Creek, which runs through the property the brand hailed from. In 2021, the brand was purchased by Derek Benham, who had recently started the Purple Wine Company. There, the brand became much more popular, and was later sold to Constellation Brands in 2012 for $160 million. The held Mark West until 2019, when it was sold to E & J Gallo Winery along with 29 other brands for $1.7 billion.
