Freemark Abbey Winery was founded in St. Helena, California by Albert “Abbey” Ahern, Charles Freeman and Markquand Foster. The three men purchased the land in 1939, though a winery had existed at that location beginning in 1886. The company closed in 1959 when Ahern died, but reopened in 1966 when it was purchased by Dick Heggie, Brad Webb, Bill Jaeger, Frank “Laurie” Wood, Jim Warren, Chuck Carpy, and John Bryan. That group held the company until 2001, when it was sold to Legacy Estate Group. When that company went bankrupt in 2005, the assets were purchased at auction by Jackson Family Wines.
