Chateau St. Jean was founded in Kenwood, California in 1973 by Ken Sheffield, and Bob and Ed Merzoian. In 1996, the brand was sold to Beringer Winery, which at the time was owned by Texas Pacific Group, a private equity fund that had recently purchased Continental Airlines. They held it until 2000, when it was sold to Australian conglomerate Foster’s Group, which split off its wine division in 2011 to become Treasury Wine Estates. In 2021, Treasury sold the brand to Foley Family Wines, led by Bill Foley.
