Taittinger Champagne was founded in Pierry, France in 1932 by Pierre Taittinger. He purchased the estate after being laid up there while recovering from a heart attack during World War I. It was family owned until 2005, when it was sold to Starwood Capital Group. However, it became clear to the family that the new owners were focused on short term profits, and began working to purchase the brand back. In 2006, the bank Crédit Agricole, working with Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, purchased Taittinger for €660 million.
