Origin

France, Europe

Petrus Wine was founded in Pomerol, France in 1837 by the Arnaud Family. In 1917, the family had to sell, and a share-holding company called La Société Civile du Château Pétrus was set up. In 1925, the widow Mme. Edmond Loubat began purchasing shares in the enterprise, and by 1945 she became the sole owner.

When Loubat died in 1961, she divided her shares between her niece Lily Lacoste-Loubat and her nephew M. Lignac, with a small proportion going to Jean-Pierre Moueix, who also owned the distribution rights for Petrus. Three years later, Moueix purchased Lignac’s shares, making him the majority owner.

The brand is now owned by the Moueix family’s holding company, Videlot SAS, which also owns wine merchant Groupe Duclot and several other hospitality ventures. In 2018, 20% of the company was sold to Colombian billionaire Alejandro Santo Domingo.
