Chateau Latour wine was founded in Pauillac, France in 1670 by the de Chavannes family, though the estate has a history of winegrowing dating back to the 14th century. The estate was owned by their descendants until the French Revolution, when the property was seized and sold off by the state. However in 1842, the family purchased the property back and formed Société Civile de Château Latour.
In 1963, the family sold a majority stake in the business to the British company Pearson Group. They sold it to Allied Lyons in 1989, which held it for only 4 years until it was again sold to French billionaire François Pinault, who organized the company under his Artemis Group.
