Chateau Haut-Brion was founded in Pessac, France in 1525 by Jean de Pontac, who obtained the land from his father-in-law in his wife’s dowry. The land remained in the aristocrat’s family until 1794, when it was liberated and divided during the French Revolution. It was owned by several different businessmen until 1836, when Joseph-Eugène Larrieu purchased it and brought the estate up to its original acreage. In 1935, the estate was purchased by American banker Clarence Dillon for 2.3 million Francs. The winery is still owned by the company he founded, Domaine Clarence Dillon, to this day.
