Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars was founded in Yountville, California in 1970 by Warren Winiarski. It is famous for winning the “Judgment of Paris” in 1976 which put Napa Valley on the map as a world wine player. In 2007, it was sold to Antinori for a reported $185 million, with partial ownership by Ste Michelle Wine Estates.
It should not be confused with Stags’ Leap Winery (using the plural progressive). Both wineries were founded at roughly the same time and come from the Stags Leap AVA, so in 1986 the California Supreme Court ruled that both could use the name.
