Penfolds Wine was founded in Adelaide, Australia in 1844 by Christopher Rawson Penfold. The winery was run by him and his wife Mary Penfold until 1884, when their daughter Georgina and son-in-law Thomas Hyland took over. It stayed in the family until 1962, when the company went public – although the Penfolds retained a controlling interest until 1976.
That year, Australian brewer Tooth & Co. took control. They became part of Adelaide Steamship Company in 1982, although that conglomerate sold of its wineries in 1990 to SA Brewing. Along with the acquisition, SA Brewing split into three separate companies, with the wineries becoming Southcorp Wines.
Southcorp was purchased by Foster’s Group in 2005. In 2011, Foster’s split its wine holdings into a new company, which they called Treasury Wine Estates.
