Paul Masson Wine was founded in 1892 in Saratoga, California by Paul Masson. When Masson’s wife died in 1936, he sold the winery to his mentee Martin Ray. Ray then sold it to Canadian-based Seagram Company in 1942, which held it until 1987. It was then purchased by Vintners International, which went bankrupt in 1993, when the brand was picked up by the Centerra Wines division of Canandaigua Brands, which renamed itself to Constellation Brands in 2000. In 2008, Constellation sold the rights for Paul Masson Wine to Wine Group LLC, which quietly discontinued the product in 2018.
When Wine Group stopped making the product, the brand reverted back to Constellation, who intended to sell the brand to E & J Gallo (along with 29 other brands) in 2019 for $1.7 billion. Concerns from the Federal Trade Commission stymied the deal, however, and it was later amended to split up the Paul Masson Wine and Paul Masson Brandy rights. The wine rights went to Gallo, while the brandy rights were sold to Sazerac for $255 million.
