Toro Wine was introduced by Giol Winery in Maipú, Argentina in 1896. The winery was started by Bautista Gargantini and Juan Giol, and the wine was originally known as “Cabeza de Toro” (Bull’s Head) before becoming known simply as Toro. By 1910, the winery was the largest in the world, selling over 43 million liters a year. Gargantini quit the business that year and returned to his native Italy, and Giol entered into a partnership with Banco Español del Río de la Plata. Four years later, Giol also returned to italy, and the Bank took over the company completely.

However, bad harvests and financial mismanagement led to financial difficulties, and Banco Español ended up selling the winery to the Province of Mendoza in 1964. In 2018, Toro was taken over by Fecovita, a cooperative of winegrowers in the region.
