Sterling Vineyards was founded in Calistoga, California in 1969 by Peter Newton. In 1977, the winery was purchased by Coca Cola. When the soft drink company decided to get out of wine, they sold the brand to Seagram in 1982. Seagram held it until 2001, when they sold the brand to Diageo. In 2015, Diageo sold Sterling Vineyards, along with Blossom Hill Wine and Beaulieu Vineyard, to Treasury Wine Estates for $600 million.
