The Stanley Wine Company was founded in Clare Valley, South Australia in 1893 by J.H. Knappstein, O. Wein-Smith, Magnus Badger, and John Cristion. By 1912, Knappstein had bought out the other three owners and became the sole proprietor. His family ran the company until it was purchased by H.J. Heinz in 1971. They sold the business to Hardy Wine Company in 1988. In 1992 Hard merged with Berri Renmano Limited to become BRL Hardy Limited. In 2003, they merged with Constellation Brands Australia to become The Hardy Wine Company, which was a division of Constellation’s larger company. In 2010, they sold an 80% stake in the company to CHAMP Private Equity, which renamed the business to Accolade Wines. In 2018, Accolade was sold to the American private equity company The Carlyle Group.
