Ravenswood Winery was founded in Sonoma, California in 1976 by Joel Peterson. As his investors began to seek an exit in the 1990s, Peterson attempted to take the company public. But failing that, the board voted to sell, and in 2001 it was sold to Constellation Brands for $148 million. They held Ravenswood for nearly two decades, until selling it to E & J Gallo Winery along with 29 other brands for $1.7 billion in 2019.
