Houghton Wines was founded in Western Australia in 1859 by Dr. John Ferguson. In 1950, the estate was purchased by Valencia Vineyards, a subsidiary of the Emu Wine Company. Emu itself was acquired by Hardy’s Wine. In 1992 Hardy’s merged with Berri Renmano Limited to become BRL Hardy Limited. In 2003, they merged with Constellation Brands Australia to become The Hardy Wine Company, which was a division of Constellation’s larger company. They later sold an 80% stake in the company to CHAMP Private Equity, which renamed the business to Accolade Wines. In 2018, Accolade was sold to the American private equity company The Carlyle Group.
