E & J Gallo Winery was founded in San Francisco, California in 1933 by brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo. The two had wanted to start a storeroom, and found that to do so legally they needed to own a winery and vineyards. The company gradually grew, and began purchasing other wineries beginning in the 1950’s. By 1993, the company was the largest winery in the country, and it became the biggest in the world by 2022.
