Croft Port was founded in York, England in 1588 by Henry Thompson. The company moved to Portugal in 1681. In 1707, the thompson family took on two new partners and was renamed Phayre, Bradley & Thompson. However, they were soon replaced by a third partner Benjamen Tilden, and the company renamed again to Thompson & Tilden. In 1736, John Croft became a partner in the firm through marriage, and it was renamed again to Thompson, Tilden, & Croft. In 1892, a majority of the business was purchased from the Croft family by Gilbey’s Port, a purchase they made complete in 1911.
In 1962, Gilbey’s merged with Justerini and Brooks to become International Distillers & Vintners. Ten years later, that company was purchased by Grand Metropolitan, which merged with Guinness in 1997 to become Diageo. However, they quickly got out of the port business, and in 2001 Croft was sold to Taylor Fladgate, which later became known as The Fladgate Partnership.
