Chateau Soverain was founded in 1943 in Howell Mountain, California by Lee Stewart. Stewart sold the company to a group of growers in 1973, and it was again sold in 1986 to Beringer Winery. In 1996, the brand was purchased from NestlĂ© by Texas Pacific Group, a private equity fund that had recently purchased Continental Airlines. They held it until 2000, when it was sold to Australian conglomerate Foster’s Group, which split off its wine division in 2011 to become Treasury Wine Estates. In 2015, Treasury Wine Estates sold Souverain to E & J Gallo.
